Staying connected

Signal in the Atlas Mountains is patchy, and Maroc Telecom is the network that reaches furthest, so please get a Maroc Telecom line when you land. It gives you a Moroccan number we can call you on during the week and on Ultra Day.

We’ve changed our advice on this, so if you’ve already sorted a SIM or eSIM, no problem, just let Alex know.

Before you fly

Your phone needs to be unlocked.

  • On an iPhone, go to Settings, then General, then About. Carrier Lock should say “No SIM restrictions”.
  • On Android, there’s no single setting for this. If you bought the phone SIM-free (from the manufacturer or a shop, not a network), or from a UK network since 2022, it’s unlocked. If you’re not sure, ask your network, or try a friend’s SIM from a different network: if it works, your phone is unlocked.
  • If it’s locked, ask your network to unlock it now, as it can take a few days.

When you land

  • Before you leave the arrivals hall, go to the Maroc Telecom counter. Whoever’s collecting you will wait.
  • Show your passport, which is needed to register the line, and ask for an eSIM with a few GB of data and some call credit. You don’t need the biggest pack. Expect to pay roughly €10–20.
  • If your phone doesn’t take eSIMs, they’ll give you a normal SIM. Keep your home SIM somewhere safe.
  • Keep your home line on for calls and texts, with data roaming turned off on it.
  • Send Alex your new Moroccan number.

If WhatsApp won’t send

Call or text Alex on his Moroccan number, which he’ll send you on WhatsApp. A normal call can get through where WhatsApp can’t.

If the counter can’t set you up, we’ll sort a backup with you at the hotel.
